The documentary method is enacted through people making, carrying, correcting, disputing, and publicly using an incomplete record—not through a neutral transcript descending from outside the story.

Adornfeld’s working record names source, date, confidence, quotation, paraphrase, reconstruction, contradiction, and gap. Missing testimony remains missing. Acquittal remains a legal result rather than becoming automatic moral exoneration.

Julia changes the record’s jurisdiction. Names precede categories; defendants remain distinct; contradictions sit beside one another; jury arithmetic enters the body of the account; later public use becomes answerable to correction.

Fragenbuch and portable method

Twenty-seven questions can travel because they are not a manifesto with one owner. The movement grows through tasks, rooms, handles, records, routes, and the right to ask what changes if a claim is true—or who pays if it is false.

The Tables preserve evidence, dispute, missing testimony, affected persons, thresholds, dissent, named action, material consequences, review, and stopping conditions without turning historical reconstruction into a people’s retrial.

When a correction arrives too late

In Novel I, the registration inquiry travels without the qualification written on its second leaf. The attempt to correct it meets an office that has closed; the omission then enters the official file. Adornfeld’s admission does not undo what has already been sent. This sequence tests the working record through an administrative consequence, not merely through a declared willingness to revise it.

The later estate-book scene brings debt and a missing receipt into the room. Its participants do not leave with a common settlement. These episodes belong beside the formal account of record and counter-record: stating a method does not establish that its users have followed it.

Postlude

The Postlude brings the Unreliable Editor, Zeitblom, and A Fellow Wayfarer back to their table. The account is finished. Their responsibility for it is not. In twelve sections, the desire to make a life complete becomes a bargain the writers must recognize in themselves.
