FULL-SPOILER SECOND READING

This optional thematic page may discuss major events from all three novels. Read the complete literary sequence first.

Austria and Burgenland, January–July 1927

The Six-Month Interval

The sequence refuses the anniversary shorthand that jumps from the Schattendorf shootings to the acquittal and the Palace of Justice fire. It restores the civil duration in between.

01

History as accumulated weather

Mourning, rent, bread, coal, elections, May Day, legal expectation, train routes, border speech, household work, and political organization are not filler. They show how public action forms before a spectacular rupture.

02

Five newspaper grammars

Accusation, procedure, solidarity, order, and völkisch inversion enter through different papers. The ensemble does not claim to exhaust the Austrian press. It shows how language authorizes different acts and different relations to the dead.

03

Burgenland without folklore

The young multilingual border province, Ödenburg/Sopron, veteran networks, Frontkämpfer routes, and Hungarian continuities remain political and material. The border is lived through travel, jurisdiction, speech, and inherited claims—not picturesque scenery.
