First death
After Alex’s death, Hermann cuts Symphony on Canvas. The painter capable of completing the total work dies symbolically. She remains bodily alive, deprived of the self that knew what every next brushstroke was for.
Second death
Alistair’s aimed bullet crosses road, glass, Spengler’s book, cloth, flesh, and prepared ground. The state preserves projectile and injury while removing the aiming hand through the grammar of a stray shot.
SCHATTENDORF in blood
The later wound names the earlier one; it does not answer it. Julia supports Hermann’s hand without authoring the inscription. The canvas holds relation, agency, and incompletion rather than a redemptive solution.
