THE GERMAN CYCLE
Die Schattendorfer Echos
A world with more than one center
Both cycles are written by Liana Marie Sive. “An English rendering by Lord Alistair” is part of the fictional construction.
Five volumes, an expanding company
Begin at the editors’ table, then settle into a house whose visitors seldom arrive with the same purpose. The German cycle makes time for an afternoon’s painting, the awkwardness of a return, and a discussion diverted by somebody who needs the room. Its Austrian German moves between intimacy, ceremony, practical speech, and comic impatience.
Across the three novels, the company spreads beyond the house. A reader comes to recognize people and objects before meeting them under changed conditions: a public room needs heating, a record needs another carrier, a promise reaches an official’s desk. The pleasure of recurrence depends on remembering the earlier encounter. The final Nachspiel brings that memory back to the people arranging the books.
This change of scale carries the constructive anti-fascist task: people need to accomplish something together while retaining the means to challenge the terms on which owners, organizers, or the state provide help. Fugal development gives their different times a shared composition.

German Prelude
Three editors gather around a table to begin Hermann’s story. A key needs its lock, a chair will not sit steadily, and someone in the next room has another demand. Their grand undertaking begins among things and people already in use.

Novel I
Hermann opens an inherited hall to the village while Julia returns with plans of her own. Visitors need chairs, a coat needs its wearer, and a painting promises an extraordinary shared world. Living together takes time that the artist cannot arrange as readily as a canvas.

Novel II
The house’s questions reach workshops, meeting rooms, and other towns. Julia’s counter-record travels alongside her writing; Hermann encounters work she has never had to do. A recital and an offer of government office draw these widening ambitions into the same composition.

Novel III
Hermann enters a government whose practical powers are attractive and whose conditions keep changing. Surveillance, public danger, Julia’s readers, and unfinished painting compete for time. The household’s earlier experiments must now face institutions that can act on a much larger scale.

German Postlude
The Unreliable Editor, Zeitblom, and A Fellow Wayfarer return to the table in twelve alternating sections. A disputed cut, an unreturned book, a bill, and Frau Klemper’s evening disturb their plans for a final account. They must decide when to put down the pen.
